The last one was a little unsatisfying (I can't even remember its title - something about Brothers?), but I'll still search this one out and read it when it comes out.

This place is pretty quiet, eh?
Anyways, I goofed in my previous reply ... Band of Brothers was about Richard. I was talking about the last one about Adam .. ah! Heart of Oak!

I don't find the Adam Bolitho ones that memorable and most of the new books in the series are quite short but I'll still buy it when it's out.

I read somewhere that the author was more or less forced into giving a time line for Richard by the publisher who printed it in an early novel. It tended to drive the series and I think he regretted the fact that it included Richards death.

Yes, I gather that the years during which Adam is coming into maturity were pretty uneventful wones in terms of British naval activity.

Have you read any of the Hazard series by Vivian White? They take place in the early years of steam, so really don't fit into this site's focus, I know. But i was getting desperate :-)
I found them to be very formulaic, and any hopes I had for the series improving were dashed when he brought Watkiss back from the dead.

I haven't read them personally yet, though will prpbably get round to them in due course.

Although the main focus of the site is Age of Sail, the early years of steam up to the American Civil War/Crimea sort of era are covered on the website and here in the forums. The Vivian Stuart thread can be found here

Apparently this will be published in 2010 so we'll have to wait a bit longer.

The book has now appeared on Amazon for pre-order although the date seems to have been pushed back to February 2011. No sysnopsis yet so I've only added a basic record to the site at www.historicnavalfiction.com/index.php/book-title-index/i/1523-in-the-kings-name. I'll do a feature nearer the time when there is more information.

I haven't read any of the later books in the series, but I'm looking forward to getting to them. And I rather like the idea of some naval fiction set in the post Napoleonic War years.

New Adam Bolitho novel In the King's Name Empty Re: New Adam Bolitho novel In the King's Name

Post by Corpsman Up Mon 08 Aug 2011, 00:02

I enjoyed Mr Kent's early books about Richard, but as he became more senior, I felt that I was missing the sea and finding myself in bed with one of his women. I really think that extending our knowledge of Richard's character could be done with less sex. I stopped reading after his sea battle with the Americans off Canada. I don't have a great intrest in Adam, I find him cut from the same jib as Richard. I now look forward to reading Kydd.

Wow, I have just now realized that there are two Bolithos. While I am reading mt last Ramage, and have one more Kydd anf one more Lewrie to go' I started accumulating the Bolitho books, for my next "assignment". (have already the first 8 of them).
I was also impressed to see that Douglas Reeman is still producing fiction at his advanced age.

I read this a month or two ago, and frankly, I have trouble remembering many of the plot elements, except to note that Tyacke does make an appearance. I do recall it being a good read, as expected with an author of Kent's experience.

New Adam Bolitho novel In the King's Name Empty Re: New Adam Bolitho novel In the King's Name

Post by 80 Winters Fri 06 Apr 2012, 23:06

Since I've chosen today to "speak my piece" concerning Douglas Reeman's Iconic series under the pen name of Alexander Kent, I've saved this one for last...........because I truly believe that it should beThe Last novel of this series.

Elsewhere, I've mentioned that I felt Heart's of Oak should have been the final book in this series, but unfortunately, I didn't speak until I read In the King's Name. Now, to my knowledge there has been no announcement of another book being written for this series (somebody please tell me that I'm right). So "please Mr. Reeman, leave us with good memories (well, at least mostly good memories) and let's put this series to bed, once and for all."

I don't like to write "bad reviews" (Mom said; "if you can't say something nice........") so I'll just let you go to Amazon or any number of review sites and take a look. I've never seen reviews that bad on a book anywhere and I agree with them.

I am the proud owner of a complete set of the Bolitho novels in first edition hardback and signed by the author (all except the last one -- and truly, I'd be embarassed to ask for his signature and he might just feel the same).

Yes, it's in my library (infact somehow I ended up with 2 copies).
